Active Self Protection

Do you know what pre-attack cues look like? There are several in this video that can help us practice Active Self Protection in our daily life to stop attacks like this one before they ever start!

Active Self Protection

How do I protect myself from armed robbery?

1. Situational awareness is your best friend. When you’re out on a Friday night past midnight, you’re more likely to find trouble than in the daytime. Knowing that, you’ve got to be aware of what is going on around you and you MUST do regular threat assessment of the people who come into your vicinity so that you can move from condition yellow to orange and act if a threat arises.

2. Transitional spaces are more dangerous, and therefore we must have a heightened sense of awareness and be more ready to take appropriate actions. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Here the surprise came because of distraction, and that distraction is a common tactic. Don’t be suckered into it!

3. Emotional fitness is an important part of covering your ASP. Once the attack begins, you’ve got to be able to weather the storm and present the issue to yourself in such a way that you can begin thinking again and counterattack your attackers. Surviving an armed robbery is oftentimes a game of counter-ambush, and you’ve got to have strong emotional fitness to do so. This poor guy didn’t, and he suffered for it.

4. Multiple attackers is not an aberration; it is the norm and you should expect it. Empty-handed skills against multiple opponents and force multiplication tools are the way to deal with bad guys like this.

Attitude. Skills. Plan.
