One Killed, 25 Wounded In Chicago Weekend Shootings

(STMW) — One man was killed and at least 25 other people — including an 81-year-old woman — were wounded in shootings on the South and West sides between Friday afternoon and early Saturday.

About midnight Saturday, Ronnie Montgomery, 24, was found on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of West Hastings, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He had been shot in the chest and shoulder.

Montgomery, of the 700 block of West Marquette, was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The 81-year-old great-grandmother, Iola Burress, was shot about 5 p.m., just minutes after viewing the body of her recently deceased daughter at a South Side funeral home.

Iola Burress, 81, survived being shot four times but was due to undergo surgery Saturday, relatives told the Sun-Times. Her 34-year-old grandson, Sylvester Burress, was also shot in the drive-by attack in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

“It’s very hard right now because we’re trying to bury her daughter and assist her and then this happens today during the wake,” said Yolanda McBride, Burress’s granddaughter. McBride’s mother, Laverne Burress, 60, is the daughter the 81-year-old was mourning.

Chicago Police said that Iola Burress and her grandson were standing outside in the 7800 block of South Carpenter when they were shot by someone who was in a passing white SUV.

The grandmother, who suffers from dementia, was shot in the right wrist and abdomen, while her grandson was shot shot in the hip, police said. They were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where their conditions were described as stable.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred Saturday afternoon in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

A 24-year-old was in the 7400 block of South Princeton about 1:50 p.m. when he was shot in the leg, police said. He was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in fair condition.

About two hours earlier, a man and a teenage boy were shot and seriously injured in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The two were shot multiple times about noon in the 1400 block of North Springfield, police said. The boy was shot three times in the groin and the man, 26, was shot in the abdomen, leg and hip. They were both taken to Norwegian American Hospital in serious condition.

About an hour earlier, a 25-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were shot in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.

They were walking in the 3900 block of South Calumet at 10:55 a.m. when someone approached and fired at them, police said. The man was shot in the hand and back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The teen transported himself to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition with a graze wound to the left side of his torso.

About 5:25 a.m., a woman was shot in the West Town neighborhood.

The woman, 18, was walking in the 1700 block of North Western when she “heard shots and felt pain,” police said. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition stabilized.

About 2:55 a.m., two men were standing outside in the 8800 block of South Princeton when another male walked up and opened fire before running off, police said.

One man, 24, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to his left forearm, police said.

The other man, 21, was shot in the ankle and took himself to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, police said. Both of their conditions had stabilized.

About 1:20 a.m., a 29-year-old man was in the 100 block of South California when he heard shots ring out and felt pain, police said. He later walked into Rush University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his buttocks, though his condition was not immediately available.

Twenty minutes earlier, two men were wounded — one critically — in another shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The two men were standing outside in the 3600 block of West Polk when a dark-colored sedan drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said.

One man, 22, was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said. The other man, 23, suffered a graze wound to his left thigh and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
