CCW in the Summer

Tips for Carrying Concealed this Summer
Posted on June 1, 2013

Now that summer is here, the temperatures are rising and extra layers of clothing are coming off. The same problem challenges those of us who choose to protect ourselves with concealed carry every year: how can I keep my firearm out of plain view while maintaining some level of comfort?

Below we discuss three locations to carry concealed during the summer months. These locations work best with a smaller firearm, so consider adding a compact firearm to your collection to make it easier to carry concealed with fewer layers.

In-waist band (IWB) may be the most popular location to carry concealed during the summer months. You will need to consider the size of your firearm when trying this position, as a larger gun may prove to be uncomfortable. Special IWB holsters are available to purchase if you decide this location works best for you.

Most IWB holsters simply clip to your waist band, and some manufacturers claim no belt is needed, however, wearing a belt can provide extra support for the holster.

Another popular option to consider is pocket carry. You will want to use a specifically designed pocket holster to protect the gun, and more importantly, break up the outline of the gun so others do not know you are carrying. The opening of your pockets will need to be considered, since carrying will not do you much good if you cannot take your firearm out quickly and easily should the situation arise.

If the temperatures are high enough that only a bathing suit and a lake will do, an off-body location is your only choice. When placing your firearm in a bag or purse, you need to make sure you will have quick access to it should the need arise. At the same time, if you are going to be some distance from your firearm, you will want to secure the zippers using a luggage lock or similar type of lock.

Consider parking your vehicle as close to where you will be swimming as possible, as keeping your gun locked in the glove box inside the locked vehicle will always be more secure than in a bag while you are enjoying the cool water with your friends and family.

Whichever location you choose (in-waist band, pocket, or off body) to carry your concealed firearm, make sure you are comfortable, as you could potentially alert others that you are carrying if you constantly adjust your firearm. Also, be sure to practice, practice, practice. Your movement to unholster your gun to defend yourself needs to be as quick and effortless as possible. Criminals are not going to allow you any extra time to arm yourself. Finally, check and re-check that your firearm is completely concealed. Be sure to sit, stand, crouch, skip, hop – whatever movement you may do during the day before you leave your home to be certain your firearm will not be in plain sight when out in public.

The guidelines above will help you out when deciding where to carry your firearm when the weather heats up.

However, knowing where to carry is only part of the equation. The most important aspect of carrying a concealed firearm is knowing how to do so as safely as possible. In fact, to receive a concealed handgun license in most states, you are required to demonstrate competence with handgun before applying.

Fortunately, we have created a free video training course that will teach you everything you need to know about carrying your firearm safely. Completion of our course satisfies your state’s requirements for receiving your concealed handgun license. So, watch the training course here and start protecting yourself and the ones you love.
